Am I a Candidate for Preimplantation Genetic Testing Services?

by Chelsea Fertility NYCPosted in IVFJuly 21st, 2017

To understand if you are a good candidate for preimplantation genetic testing services, you must first have a grasp on what these services are and when exactly they are used in the fertility treatment process. If you believe you could be a candidate for preimplantation genetic testing, please read through this blog post and contact Chelsea Fertility NYC to learn more or request an appointment.

Preimplantation genetic testing is broken down into two types of testing:

  • Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD)
  • Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS)

What is PGD?

Embryos can be screened for a specific genetic disease prior to implantation during in vitro fertilization (IVF treatment). Certain genetic conditions can be passed down from one generation to the next, and when the parent or parents are already aware that a condition is present, they can request PGD services to remove the genetic abnormality prior to embryo implantation. Examples of genetic abnormalities for which PGD is appropriate include Tay-Sachs disease, sickle cell anemia, Marfan syndrome and Huntington’s disease.

What is PGS?

Instead of locating a specific genetic disease in the vein of PGD, PGS instead tests embryos for the presence of chromosomal abnormalities. Sometimes, too many or too few chromosomes are produced, called aneuploidy. PGS, also called aneuploidy screening, is used to test for chromosome disorders. PGS is typically used in cases where the female patient is of a more mature age, if previous IVF cycles were unsuccessful or if recurrent miscarriage has occurred.

Do I need to undergo IVF to have preimplantation genetic testing?

Yes, this type of screening is part of the IVF process. Preimplantation genetic testing occurs before an embryo is implanted into the uterus of either the female partner or gestational surrogate. We invite patients to learn more about the process at Chelsea Fertility NYC here.

Fortunately, the fertility specialists of Chelsea Fertility NYC are experienced in performing both PGD and PGS services. Preimplantation genetic testing is safe and effective, though we always invite patients to contact our office with any questions or concerns they may have.
