The Emotional Challenges of Pregnancy after Infertility

by Chelsea Fertility NYCPosted in InfertilityMay 19th, 2017

For those who have struggled with infertility, a positive pregnancy test is a truly momentous experience. To finally achieve something you’ve worked toward and dreamed of is a tremendous relief, especially if you’ve waited years for your happy ending.

A positive pregnancy test is certainly worth a celebration, but Chelsea Fertility NYC understands that the journey to parenthood can be complex, and that even after a pregnancy has been achieved, future parents may be torn over how they feel.

When emotions run high

Former infertility patients may feel understandably anxious about finally being pregnant after fertility treatment. Treating infertility generally requires a significant amount of time, energy, focus and financial commitment from both partners. It is entirely possible to be overjoyed that a pregnancy has finally occurred and to also worry that something might still go wrong. Some former patients will wait longer to tell family members and friends about the pregnancy because they want to be as sure as possible that the baby is “safe.”

It’s OK to reach out to your doctor

At Chelsea Fertility NYC, we strongly encourage current and former patients to discuss their worries with their fertility specialist. Our specialists have worked through these concerns with all our patients at some point during the treatment process, including once a successful pregnancy takes place. We can address your questions from a medical perspective, which can help make anxieties feel less open-ended and the pregnancy feel more possible. We also advise that former patients should feel safe sharing the news with those who have supported them along the journey to parenthood because that support system of family and friends will be genuinely thrilled to hear your good news.

Why it can be difficult to “move on”

Ultimately, how you and your partner address post-fertility treatment concerns is entirely your decision. It’s okay to feel as if you cannot simply “relax” or “stop worrying” — you’ve been through a process that has caused an incredibly high level of stress. The important thing to remember is that while your feelings are valid, they do not have to rule over everything you do and say until your baby is born.

Consider additional support

Have you considered an infertility support group? Support groups exist for all stages of the infertility process, from diagnosis to treatment to post-treatment. They can be in-person or online, for men only, women only or couples. Learn how you can benefit from an infertility support group.
