Egg Freezing in New York City: Everything You Need to Know

by Chelsea Fertility NYCPosted in Fertility PreservationSeptember 24th, 2019

Egg-freezing seminars, parties, and even cocktail hours have graced social media and online magazine articles with increased popularity over the past five years. New York City, in particular, has hosted many of these events, with women in their 20s and 30s ever curious to learn whether they are a good candidate for egg freezing, what’s involved in the process, how much it costs, and where can they get started.

Though cocktail parties with fertility themes are certainly engaging, when it comes to the facts about freezing your eggs in New York City, there are things women should know so, if desired, they can begin the process that best fits their needs and family-planning goals.

Getting started: Egg freezing in New York City
You may have heard the terms “egg freezing” and “fertility preservation” used interchangeably, and although the actual procedure is the same for both, the motivations behind the women seeking the procedure are what differentiate the terms. For example, egg freezing (sometimes also called “social” or “elective” egg freezing) refers to women who are freezing their eggs because they wish to focus on their careers, they haven’t yet found the right partner, or they have other goals as priorities ahead of having a child. Thanks to a better societal understanding of fertility in recent years, women are more aware of what it means to prolong having children until their mid-to-late 30s and early 40s and that they may struggle down the road and wish to prevent this by proactively freezing their eggs for later use.

Fertility preservation, on the other hand, stems from a medical need. Women seeking to preserve their fertility might do so due to a recent cancer diagnosis or a family history of premature menopause, or some other condition or upcoming surgery that impacts their reproductive system. Again, the actual process for freezing eggs is the same for both egg freezing and fertility preservation, but the motivations (and the need for a speedy start time) can vary.

How does egg freezing work?
Once a fertility specialist agrees that you are a good candidate for the procedure, you will begin ovarian stimulation and oocyte (egg) retrieval to obtain eggs that can be frozen and thawed at a later time when you’re ready to have a child.

How much does egg freezing cost?
Costs for egg freezing and storage can vary across fertility clinics. At Chelsea Fertility, we offer patients a fee of $9,900 for 20 eggs frozen or four cycles (whichever occurs first). We also offer a single cycle with one year of storage for $5,500.

Are you ready?
Chances are, if you’ve come across this blog post then you’re at the very least curious about egg freezing and perhaps even whether you’re a good candidate. We invite you to schedule an egg-freezing consultation with the physicians of Chelsea Fertility today.
