Recurrent Pregnancy Loss: What You Need to Know

by Chelsea Fertility NYCPosted in InfertilityMarch 23rd, 2018

Recurrent pregnancy loss, also called recurrent/multiple miscarriage, refers to three or more consecutive miscarriages occurring prior to the 20th week of pregnancy. Miscarriages are actually quite common on their own, with an estimated 1 in 4 pregnancies ending in miscarriage. In cases of recurrent miscarriage, a fertility specialist’s assistance may be recommended to provide a diagnosis and treatment plan in order to maintain a healthy, viable pregnancy.

Chelsea Fertility NYC’s physicians work directly with patients facing multiple miscarriages, and though we know the experiences are emotionally and physically trying, we can work with you to best determine why the miscarriages are taking place and what course of action can be taken to prevent future pregnancy loss.

Recurrent miscarriage causes

  • An infection is present and requires treatment
  • A hormonal imbalance is present
  • A genetic condition, such as a chromosomal abnormality, is present
  • Female anatomical abnormalities are present
  • The cause for miscarriage(s) is unknown

Recurrent miscarriage treatment options

  • Lifestyle changes such as improvements to diet/exercise routines
  • Medication to treat an infection
  • Fertility medication(s) to address a hormonal imbalance
  • Preimplantation genetic testing such as PGD/PGS
  • Surgery to address a female anatomical abnormality

When should I seek fertility care for recurrent miscarriage?

You do not need to wait until the third consecutive miscarriage occurs before reaching out to a fertility specialist. Patients are encouraged to request a consultation when they are comfortable doing so. Fertility testing services can help determine the cause for your miscarriage experience and offer possible treatment options.

We fully understand that having a miscarriage carries a great deal of disappointment, frustration and stress (at the very least), but you do have options when and if you choose to pursue them. You are certainly not alone, nor are you responsible for the miscarriage. Reaching out to a fertility specialist can help relieve the mystery surrounding why the miscarriage(s) has taken place and show that you have treatment options available that may allow you to carry a pregnancy successfully.
