Downtown patients face a decision the rest of Manhattan does not: whether to take the express and walk further, or the local and sit longer. Both routes end at our office on East 37th Street, and neither is obviously better — it depends on which station you start from and how much walking you want at the end of the ride. Below is the honest version of each.
Choosing between the express and the local
The 4 and 5 stop at Wall Street; the 4, 5 and 6 all stop at Brooklyn Bridge–City Hall; and Fulton Street is served by the 2, 3, 4, 5, A, C, J and Z. Wherever you start, the Lexington Avenue line is the spine of the trip.
Taking the 4 or 5 express means far fewer stops, but they run past 33rd Street without stopping — you get off at Grand Central–42nd Street and walk five blocks south on Park Avenue. Taking the 6 local from Brooklyn Bridge–City Hall puts you at 33rd Street and Park, four blocks from the office, with more stops along the way.
In practice the express plus walk tends to come out ahead at rush hour, while the local is the easier option in bad weather or when you would rather not add a walk. Either way, budget somewhere around twenty-five to thirty-five minutes and treat that as approximate.
